Key findings
- Matsuya has the biggest price gap between locations: its priciest restaurant charges 17% more than its cheapest for the same basket. KFC has the smallest gap, 0%.
- 横浜市, 14 is the biggest cluster of bargain fast food in Japan: 146 of its 146 restaurants rank in their brand's cheapest fifth nationally.
- Osaka is the cheapest prefecture for fast food overall (Drive Thru Index 100, where 100 is the national typical price) and Kochi the most expensive (100), averaging each brand against its own national prices.

Matsuya Has Japan’s Biggest Price SwingMatsuya’s basket is ¥2,280 at its cheapest in さいたま市, Saitama, and ¥2,670 at its priciest in 庄原市, Hiroshima. That is a 17% gap, while Gyumeshi (regular) ranges from ¥430 to ¥540.
Six Brands, One National Price PatternKFC, Pizza Hut, CoCo Ichibanya, Sukiya and MOS Burger have identical prices at every location in view. MOS Burger is the most consistent, with its MOS Burger priced at ¥500 everywhere.
Sukiya Leads Japan’s Restaurant CountSukiya has the most restaurants shown, with 1953 locations. Its Gyudon (regular) is ¥480 everywhere, and its basket is ¥2,140 nationwide.
KFC’s Chicken Costs The Same EverywhereKFC’s Original Chicken (1 pc) is ¥330 at all 1358 locations compared. Its basket is ¥2,870 nationwide, including Osaka, Kanagawa and Chiba as well as Oita, Aomori and Nagasaki.

How the index works
Every day we check the menu at every US restaurant of each chain, using the same ordering app its customers use, and record each item's pickup and delivery price. Restaurants are compared on a basket of items that every full-menu restaurant of that brand sells, so a comparison is never skewed by a missing item. Restaurants with a limited menu, and prices that are clearly a menu code error, are left out of comparisons. "Typical" means the median restaurant.
